Hey everyone,

I’m sorry about my extended absence the past couple of months! I know a lot of you have been wondering where I am and why I haven’t been reviewing new products or responding to comments.

After much thought, I’m sad to say I will no longer be reviewing new Lip Smackers on Bunnycookie. This brand means a lot to me but I am no longer passionate about it post-Bonne Bell’s ownership.

This is for a lot of reasons:

  • Expense: Lip Smackers no longer have shelf presence in my local stores and I know I’m not alone in that. I’ve had to rely on the internet and in turn pay a significant premium. It has seriously begun to add up, in part because of:

~

  • Quantity: The collections they’re churning out have gotten way too big. You may remember me complaining about the 20+ smacker Easter set this year. That’s far too much for most people and it discourages collecting. Instead of finding holiday releases exciting I started to dread them due to the sheer volume. Sure, I could be pickier about what I buy but I’m a completionist and I like to review the full set on the blog. I don’t want any more Disney products. I don’t want another Marshmallow Treat. I don’t want to pay for new art on old flavors.

~

  • Quality: Formula changes, loose caps, mismatched tubes, weak scents, the Peppermint/Cin Sugar debacle, Smoochie Club not fulfilling orders, flavor reveals that never happen (Pink Lemonade biggy, Oatmeal Cookie), the list goes on. The rotten cherry on top are the Chinese-made tinned balms and dollar store collections, both of which indicate declining quality. No thanks.

~

  • Mission: Bonne Bell didn’t just make lip balm, they were beacons of their community; they provided jobs (and to a demographic often ignored: senior citizens), supported health initiatives, and provided fantastic, small-town style customer service until the end. There was a ton of heart in that company, and growing up I always connected with and felt represented by the brand. Despite smackers insane popularity, the company never felt mass marketed. It paid off too; rarely do you see this type of brand loyalty. Rarer yet is honesty from a corporation.

That about sums it up. I don’t mean to bash Markwins, they’ve supported blog contests and sent me products in the past to review which I greatly appreciate. The truth is I would be saying this no matter what company acquired Lip Smackers, even if the transition was perfect and they were releasing flavors I’ve only dreamed of. Ultimately my passion for the brand stops with Bonne Bell, it just took me awhile to realize it.

As for the blog? There will be updates but it will only be older smackers from now on. The comment system will be the same as usual; everyone is welcome to discuss old and new smackers to their heart’s content. I’m so sorry BC won’t be your source for new reviews anymore. I’ve met a lot of collectors and made a lot of friends and I love you guys! Who knew something like lip balm could mean so much to so many people?

I freaking KNEW this was gonna happen – our beloved Lip Smackers turning to crap upon the sale of Bonne Bell/Markwin’s acquisition. It’s why I was so saddened by the turn of events when it initially was announced, and why I became a hoarder of my much-loved balm. Tragic and devastating. It’s the end of an era, Folks – we had 45 amazing years, and I’m grateful for them.

  2. It’s understandable. A couple weeks ago I was comparing some “new” versions of the same scents and the Bonne Bell versions that were years old had way more scent that the Markwins versions that were just a few months old.
Walgreen’s had some 4-packs of mismatched Bonne Bell balms that Markwins must have been trying to clear out. I bought a bunch of them.
I guess I’ll have to give up on my dream of ever seeing a return of 2000 Cookies or Nilla Mint Frost!

I’ve been feeling the same way but I wasn’t really sure if I was alone. Seeing products start to be made in China made me really antsy. I too am getting annoyed at how many are being released at Holidays. I have had to budget for them in the past.

It’s not the Lip Smackers we know and love anymore, it’s something different now. And that’s OK, many kids will grow up with Markwins Smackers and not know any better. They’ll have their own memories, we’ll have ours.

Thank you for providing a great blog and pictures over the years, I for one am looking forward to the new format.

I mourn the loss of Bonne Bell as a whole. Thankfully the 10.0.6 is still being sold by Aspire in Ulta. I bought a ton of older Lip Smackers to last me until my golden years. I am placing one last order of Bonne Bell items that are left over on the color and flavor shop, save it to pass down to my daughter when she’s old enough to wear make up.

I can only hope that someone else buys it and restores it back to its former glory.

  5. This is disappointing to hear, but I completely understand. Yesterday on Lip Smacker’s Facebook page, I was so excited to see the upcoming coffee flavors and I even had a moment of, “hmm I wonder if these will even show up or not, like the elusive oatmeal cookie set?” That’s not a good thought to have about a company, wondering if their product even exists! However, I’m too optimistic for my own good, so I’m still gonna look. Lol

I’m still excited to read your blog though, it’s nice to see Lip Smackers I’ve forgotten about or never even knew about. 🙂

  6. bunnycookie i stopped buying new ones about 6 months ago your not alone. im not here for wet n wild lip balm…

Thank you for your honesty. I’ve been a huge fan of your blog for years and as a collector myself, I envied all of your beloved Lip Smackers. Ever since the transition from Bonne Bell to Markwins, things just have not been the same. I too have been getting tired of the same old holiday flavors in different packaging. Resorting to ebay and their website for Lip Smackers did get too expensive. Hopefully the company can note of our dislikes and change a few things. This blog will forever live with me as the blog of one of the greatest Lip Smacker collectors. 🙂

I understand what you mean! This is exactly why I haven’t been on this website in almost a year! My passion for lip smackers just died down. They lost what made them different from the cheapo dollar store scented lip balms. Now sadly they became just like them- a cheap, children’s makeup brand with Frozen packaging.

I have plenty of lip smackers that I bought before Markwins took over. I even have a 2006 Holiday Lip Smacker pencil case with 6 never used lip smackers inside (the one with the cute animals like Artic, Cupcake, etc.) I wish they could’ve continued onto the same path so we could continue to relive the magic of childhood that we once had even if it is through a lip balm.

    • Heather Towry on October 1, 2016 at 2:24 AM said:

Lol not only are they LIKE dollar store cheapo balms, they ARE dollar store cheapo balms now – their Marvel smackers are literally being sold in dollar stores!

I like shopping for fun stuff at dollar stores as much as the next person but I will not watch my favorite brand go down this road. I do not collect dollar store junk.

  9. I understand. This brand has gone down the toilet since Markwins owned it. I had hopes that they wouldn’t completely destroy what Bonne Bell created and that they would make their collections as interesting as their Wet n Wild ones. I’m so glad I stocked up on older Lip Smackers! I’ll still be searching for them at every discount store (my nearest Ollie’s has a TON of those Girl Scout Cookie Trefoils duo and I’ve already bought four of them), but I’m not sure if I should continue buying the newer collections. I’ve noticed they’ve not only changed the flavors, but also the ingredients that are supposed to make them moisturizing. They dry out my lips more than the Bonne Bell/Aspire Brands ones, which makes it kind of pointless to use them.

Bunny Cookie, I’ll still look for your posts and enjoy the nostalgia of old Lip Smackers. I still would like to see the Cosmic Lip Smackers you own. ? Thank you for creating this blog.

    • I am having the same issue with ingredients. Earlier this year I had to stop using (new) smackers because I noticed they weren’t actually moisturizing anymore. I had to use other brands which is a first for me. I’m guessing they are cutting corners on ingredients. They might as well just make them in China.

Thanks for sticking around and I promise to pull out my cosmics sometime!

  10. I’m sad to see this brand go downhill and this blog stop making posts. I’ve been disappointed in Markwins too. I just typed in Lip Smacker in Google news and a Yahoo page came up titled ‘The New Holiday Flavors from Lip Smackers warm our nostalgic heart.” I checked out the page and the flavors are supposed to be Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice, Sugarplum, and Gingerbread Girl. They are supposed to hit stores October 15. What really confused me was why isn’t lip smackers posting it on their social media sites like FB, Insta, and Twitter? Why on some random Yahoo News article which no one has even commented on and no one will probably read? And why are they giving sneak peeks on Snapchat when you can’t even tell what type of flavors the holiday line is supposed to be? Seems kind of fishy for me like they don’t want us to know what the flavors are. Are the flavors just repeats repackaged? If we saw repackaged flavors, then we’d complain. The instagram photos from their Snapchat are too blurry to even read the flavors, and I’ve zoomed in on the pictures.

Oh, and the oatmeal cookie trio is supposedly going to come in a party pack in Jan ’17 (via instagram) . I don’t believe that. The person probably just e-mailed or phoned LS a bunch of times and someone probably just gave an answer to please the person. After all, if it was going to be released in Jan ’17, wouldn’t they release the news on FB and Instagram?

And I wonder if all this quietness on holiday is because they have nothing new planned for fall. They have new tsum-tsums (which is obvious. After all, its becoming their only bread and butter staple) and the flavors I wrote above but nothing else.

And the tsum-tsums success with LS makes them into some kind of one-hit-wonder. They can have a hit with that with people, but when it comes to something else (trolls, spiderman, ect. . .), it doesn’t set the cosmetic world ablaze.

    • As usual you hit a lot of important points. And I will still be updating the blog with posts of older smackers, so I hope you stick around 🙂

      • Speaking of the new Tsum Tsums, the Sally one (from a Nightmare Before Christmas) is peppermint candy corn, which sounds really odd to me. I saw a photo of it on Instagram and I was confused as to why they would come up with such a flavor. I assume it’s another excuse to sell a creamy, butter mint type flavor like all the other ones.

Well that’s disheartening to hear but I can’t blame you.My Wal-Mart is now being renovated and has gotten rid of all the older collections I was planning to buy so now my selections are super limited unless I buy one of those weird mix matched sets at Walgreens.
Can I make a request? Can you do a full review of the cosmic collection please?

I will always love Lip Smackers and will probably always be curious what they’re brewing up even if Markwins does the inevitable. I’ve followed the brand for over 20 years now and the only one I’m loyal to any more, but I’m really sick of Markwins sh*t.

Obviously they’ve cut lots of corners and we notice. Um hello Marvel Lip Smackers being sold AT DOLLAR GENERAL. The caps are trash. I’ve noticed the ones by registers, Marvel and Frozen, have cheap tubes and labels. And can we talk about their labels…I swear they hire children to make them. That’s probably why they support the Boys & Girls Club so they can just tell the kids it’s and art and crafts day and they have them make the labels for Lip Smackers. I mean all millennials today want a brand that gives back but really…what connection does Lip Smackers have with a Girls & Boys Club??? Don’t even get me started about the Trainor singer.

Can we talk about their horrendous social media people? They literally post the same flavors OVER & OVER again-some that have NOT been in stores in OVER 2 YEARS!? They don’t even credit it by saying ‘this flavor can be purchased on the website’. Idiotic! I really REALLY want to know what planet Emily Huang and Bill George live on, seriously!

Also, WHAT IS THE INCENTIVE OF COLLECTING Lip Smackers that ARE NOT NEW? You can not keep bringing out ‘new’ collections with the same flavors you promoted the last 2 years. You CAN’T do that with lip balm. I get it with certain holiday staples like Sugar Plum because that was one flavor Bonne Bell made sure was in every holiday collection, but not every other one.

Markwins will suffer for acting so aloof to the very obvious call-outs that are so easy to see. These people need to take a Bonne Bell/Lip Smacker history lesson/boot camp from us and then go back into their offices and actually put out good stuff. Tsum Tsums won’t last forever.

    • They keep putting out the same flavors over and over again. It’s no wonder why I have so many of the same flavors with different packaging. All they do is change the name of the flavor and label. Heck, they rarely even change the color of the balm! I’m getting fed up with it.

      • Seriously, I agree. How many times has berry slush been made into another balm? I honestly can’t count! Everytime they “release” a lip balm, it is a flavor that is already out, and just with a different label stuck onto it. I am getting sick of the same flavors from markwins. The final straw for me was finding Lip smackers at the dollar store!

I could go on for Aeons…

  13. Honey Bee on October 4, 2016 at 3:04 PM said:

I’m with all of you. Christmas was the last set I bought. My daughter bought a Tsum-Tsum, not a fan. I dropped it on my foot and dang that hurt!!! Not a fan of them.

*** I know this is specifically a Lip Smacker site… but I really miss the Bonne Bell line. The 1990s line, Lip Lix, Lip Lites, Flip Gloss, Lip Shake…

  14. Did anyone just check LS’s website and FB page? They have holiday up, and it’s everything from last year wrapped up in different packaging with different labels. The Marvel flavors sound boring and aren’t innovative. That’s why they weren’t promoting anything. I knew something fishy was going on when they were completely mum about Halloween and fall flavors.

Lip Smackers is becoming such a laughingstock because they’re relying SOLELY on the Tsum-Tsums to bring them the dough. Newsflash Markwins: you’re falling into the fad trap. Tsum-tsums is one big fad, and once people have gotten tired of them, they’re going to drop LS like a hot potato because you have nothing else to offer to the public besides the same thing with different packaging and different names which are the same as last year and so on. People will soon catch on and move on.

    • Heather Towry on October 4, 2016 at 4:20 PM said:

Oh my god these are horrible! And look how many there are, almost 40… I’m so done with this brand.

    • Yeah, I saw. I mean, they could’ve at least added ONE or TWO new flavors into it, but noooo. Just the same stuff from last year. I wouldn’t be surprised if the flavors this year that were shimmers last year were also shimmery. That’s what happened with the Easter set this year when they came out with the same flavors. They’re not even trying anymore. The originality is gone, and I bet the only good collections from Markwins were just things that Bonne Bell planned before they sold the company. I mean, the packaging of the holiday flavors are cute, but I want something new. When was the last time we actually got a new (completely new, not a renamed flavor) Lip Smacker flavor?

This is all a huge disappointment. I think we should just start collecting the old stuff and cherish them. Is anyone with me?

      • Heather T on October 4, 2016 at 5:29 PM said:

I’ve been thinking this for a long long time….. and you know, these new ones aren’t even that cute. They look like they always look. Innovation isn’t Markwin’s best trait…

  15. Heather Towry on October 4, 2016 at 4:27 PM said:

Did you guys hear the new Tsum Tsums are made in China too? Like Stef said those are the bread and butter of the brand right now and they aren’t even treating that right!!!

    • Bethany on October 4, 2016 at 7:43 PM said:

The Tsum Tsums are NOVELTIES. Don’t even moisturize as well as regular Lip Smackers. Honestly the Tropical flavors in the Party Pack were good, Sriracha and Horchata were good too.Smoothies were as well. It’s just EVERYTHING else was DISNEY AND REPEATS ALL 2016. Markwins does not have a creative bone on their whole team. Lazy, lazy, LAZZZZYYYYYYYY!!! They can not feel good about the jobs they do when they put literal sh*t out and nothing new after the first of the year.

I will still probably buy original Holiday and that is it. The Marvel flavors are so idiotic sounding. Amazing Pomegranate? Patriotic Vanilla!?? What about any of this relates to Marvel. But seriously, I agree Renee, they couldn’t of at least put 1 or 3 new flavors in there?

Emily Huang is now head of all Bonne Bell/Lip Smackers brands at Markwins. Which clearly she’s sleeping at the wheel because they haven’t done anything with the BB brand and clearly nothing new with Lip Smacker. Bill George is her boss. Both need to leave cosmetics immediately.

      • They probably don’t care about the brand because they get paid a ton of money per year, have great benefits, retirement, pension, social security, ect…. When the company does bad, their salaries or benefits aren’t going to take a hit.

Also, flavor innovation isn’t their forte. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again but they do better with cosmetics with their wnw line and pf like foundation, lipstick and lip gloss colors, mascara, ect…. All those things don’t require much innovation regarding flavors, scents, and names. You put Markwins in with a lip balm company that’s known for their flavor innovation since 1973 and you get someone who’s running around like a chicken with its head cut off–someone who doesn’t know what they are doing because they lack experience in this type of field.

        • Heather Towry on October 4, 2016 at 8:38 PM said:

I bet they’re doing just fine with Lip Smacker. We can say all we want that they lack innovation and Smackers don’t belong in the Markwins family, but I bet we’re wrong. Us long time serious fans make up a tiny little fraction of customers.

You bet whatever they’re doing is working and Bill George will be celebrated for saving the brand.

      • Heather Towry on October 4, 2016 at 8:32 PM said:

Novelties or not they are part of the brand and I judge them for it. You just know Markwins is DYING to make everything over in China but for now they know the outcry would be too much. Give it another year or two at most….

      • Heather Towry on October 4, 2016 at 8:36 PM said:

Also how can you say that Emily Huang/Bill George need to leave cosmetics? It’s a business. They are probably making insane profits churning out Smackers to this extreme. They are doing what works, which is Disney.

News flash, us collectors make up 1% of their market. Everyone else on FB/IG and IRL are freaking out over the stupid Marvel flavors and Christmas repeats. THOSE people are the demographic, not us. We’re too picky and we aren’t where the profits are.

For all we know, Bill George has “turned the brand around” and it’s up 500% since acquisition (or something). THAT’s the bottom line.

        • Bethany on October 5, 2016 at 3:28 PM said:

Most people who run cosmetics companies care about the product, use the product and can connect with the customers. MARKWINS IS NOT THAT COMPANY therefore even if Tsum Tsums are saving the day, it won’t last forever. Give that 2 years and into the next thing. You have to be innovative with lip balm otherwise customers will get bored, sales decline and companies will not carry your product in store. Many consumers are very savvy and check ingredients, orgins of manufacturing, etc. Even if we’re the 1% we probably spend 3X as much as the regular consumer, who doesn’t buy every new Party Pack coming out, or collection-most of us do! So our opinion does matter. How hard is it to do a few brand new flavors a year and some really good originals collections? I literally avoid any Disney branded Smacker now. I will buy any but that just to spite it.

          • Heather Towry on October 5, 2016 at 7:04 PM said:

Companies hire data scientists, psychologists, marketers, all sorts of people to understand how to increase their bottom line. The Disney bs is clearly working or they’d stop doing it. That’s how companies work.

Smackers are making millions a year or Markwins would have never bothered acquiring the brand. Markwins did not buy Smackers to continue its “legacy” so when we get mad at them for tarnishing Bonne Bell’s history, it’s falling on deaf ears.

You know how I know collectors are a small piece of the profit pie? Because Markwins treats us like crap. The second they start catering to collectors, you know something is wrong. Common sense says collectors are NICHE and a big business has no place catering to a tiny fraction of it’s consumer base.

To be clear: Markwins isn’t doing anything egregious or uniquely offensive, they’re acting like any normal company who has yearly sales quotas to meet for investors. What was unique was how Bonne Bell operated. That’s what we need to keep in mind here. That’s why this is so heartbreaking.

  16. Wow. This jus sucks! Glad i have 200+ spares that are 97% Bonne Bell. My fav set was the novelties…i wouldve loved that set as a kid! I have 2 spares of the whole set of 15.

  18. Has anyone found any Aspire Brands/Bonne Bell Lip Smackers in stores since we’ve talked last? I found some of the 4-packs Markwins randomly threw together at Walgreens and I bought three of them. They were on clearance.

  19. I havent looked at Walgreens but im on my way to Kmart in the area. I will let everyone know. So sad this has happened. 🙁 Jus sucks!

Just found a random Tinkerbell Tsum Tsum in Peach Pie flavor at Target. I have’t seen it advertised on facebook. I picked it up for my daughter since she loves Tinkerbell. Will let you know later how it smells/tastes.

  21. I’ve seen on Instagram that there’s this Lip Smacker bucket set (yes, a bucket) sold at Walmart with 8 balms for about $10. There appears to be two new flavors in the cupcake set.

  22. I admit, I caved in and bought a couple trio canes. They’re the same scents for the most part, but I noticed they changed the caps back to the good ones and the labels are holographic. I just wish they would’ve created new flavors.

  23. When I went to Kmart here in Ohio alot of the Smackers were Bonne Bell. But yea I have yet to use the Christmas ones from last year so im not too unhappy. I really like “Gingerbread Girl” and the “Star Sugar Cookie”….Oddly enough the “Sugar Plum” was done very well last year. I recall Bunnycookie even saying so. Anyways im not happy with alot of the changes but im not gunna stop buying the Smackers I want. Like they NEED to make a Ginger Ale one!

Yes! I’d love that idea. I’d like a just plain coffee flavored one also.

      • Don’t forget an Churro/ Elephant Ear flavor as well as Snickerdoodle and more nut flavors like Pistachio Macaron, etc. then I’ll be really happy! (As long as they’re not half-a#$ed formulas)

    • I’ve always wondered in the long history of Bonne Bell and them being known for the soda flavors, why they never did a Ginger Ale flavor. Also with their Coke partnership, why haven’t they done a Barq’s Red Creme Soda?!?!
