lip-smacker-diamond-icingDebuting all the way back in 2000, the Jewel Lips collection is a sparkly classic that, much like the Cosmic collection, is still very sought after today. In total there were twelve different smackers, each adorned with a name and jewel that represented a birthstone.

This Lip Smacker collection is a good example of how important a cute theme is when it’s time to look back and reminisce–though I can’t speak for the formulas on all twelve (since mine are all still in the package) the seven I have extras of have either completely lost their smell or, at most, retain a hint of frosting.

And since the frosty glitter-infused balm can easily be found in its full-scented glory today (such as in the Disney Princess line), I’ll have to assume it’s less the lip balm itself and more the shimmery labels and gem-encrusted caps that keeps fans asking for a re-launch. Myself included!

There are a few flavor standouts though, such as Butterscotch Topaz, Emerald Butter Mint, Turquoise Sprinkle Cake, and until this year, Amethyst Sour Grape. However I don’t have opened versions of these–if you do, please comment and let us know how they have held up over the years! πŸ™‚

  1. Hi! Thank you so much for doing this post! πŸ™‚ I remember seeing these in stores but my mom would never buy these products because I was way too young. Someone once gave me the Peach Pearidot but for some reasons, the cap of it is the only thing I have left of this lip smacker. LOL I wish I could try the Amethyst Sour Grape since it is my birthstone & I love anything grape flavoured! What is yours?

    • That’s so cute, poor you must have been so disappointed, haha πŸ™ Though smackers do seem like a good replacement for makeup when kids want to emulate mom or sis.

Ooo, lucky you, Amethyst Sour Grape was/is one of the most popular and rightfully so. Mine is Topaz which isn’t so cute, but I love butterscotch so I can’t complain.!

i never thought i’d say this about lip balm, but, beautiful pics lol πŸ™‚ i’ve never been been so lucky to have these but i’ve wanted them for a while.

    • Thank you very much! Definitely watch eBay!

I had the diamond icing when I was a kid and I can’t stop thinking about it! I feel like it is the perfect little relic of my childhood. I have to get my hands on one! Do you have any extras to sell or do you have advice on how to find it?

    Hi there!

I’m not sure why, but your blog isn’t sending updates to my email anymore. I’ll have to retype my address in and see if it gets fixed or not.

I have all twelve of these, and they are simply perfect. Opal Watermelon and Butterscotch Topaz smell all buttery now, like they’ve completely lost their scent. As far as the rest of the ten go, they’re absolutely great!

Diamond Icing is a pure icing flavor. Dreamy Creamy Pearl is another cake-ish flavor that I can’t quite put my finger on, (but it’s still amazing) and then there’s Amethyst Sour Grape. Amethyst Sour Grape is my ALL-TIME favorite lip smacker. Out of the 600 or so that I have, Amethyst Sour Grape beats them all out. I’m glad you did this post, so I could express how much I love the grape flavored one. Honestly, it tastes like royalty! Lol πŸ™‚

    • Eep hopefully it’s fixed–I know it can take 24-48 hours for the email digest to be sent out so that might be why.

Thank you for taking the time to write out the scent descriptions! That’s interesting about Opal Watermelon– the original watermelon flavor is super lasting (like, it’ll hold its scent for decades) so I wonder what was changed in the birthstone formula. Maybe someone can chime in and tell us how the Opal version was different.

Amethyst Sour Grape is on point! Royalty indeed, though I think you just accidentally came up with an adorable themed idea… uh a sparkly royalty party pack decorated with adorable themed artwork like tiaras and treasures? YES PLEASE πŸ˜€ !!

I recently got some of these unopened on eBay, and when I opened them, the only one that still had scent and flavor was Amethyst Sour Grape. The rest all have a VERY waxy smell to them- like freshly opened crayons. I still love them, and was super excited to add them to my collection, even if I don’t use them. I SO want them to bring this line back- especially Amethyst Sour Grape and Peach Pearidot

    • That’s what I figured! I guess Amethyst Sour Grape was determined to be a 2000s classic πŸ™‚
I was mentioning in another comment how strange it is that Opal Watermelon lost its scent… I wish I could say I remembered how it smelled compared to the original Watermelon (which as far as I can tell won’t lose its scent any time soon).

      • Opal Watermelon’s flavor was a watermelon Jolly Rancher through and through. Also the same flavor as Watermelon Wish, Watermelon Ice or Melon Ice if you have any of those. Love when they do that specific watermelon flavor, but they haven’t in quite some time.

I remember I had about half the collection. Amethyst Sour Grape and Butterscotch Topaz were my favorites. I wish I would’ve liked Opal Watermelon more since that’s my birthstone, but I’m not crazy about watermelon scented things even though I love the real fruit. The glitter in the Sour Grape one did kind of drive me crazy since it was big pieces of glitter and not shimmer like the others. I no longer have any of these, some I lost, some I used up and some I gave away, but I do kind of wish I kept the caps from the ones I used up.

    • That’s funny, I’ve actually heard multiple stories (including someone in this comment thread) of people hanging on to the caps to switch out with on other lip balms. I think they felt like a special treasure to kids!

  6. All of mine now smell plasticy. I did love Butterscotch Topaz, Emerald Butter Mint and Aquamarine Freeze. I liked the uniqueness of Boysenberry Ruby. I wish the Butterscotch they did with Beauty and Beast was the same flavor, I miss Butterscotch Topaz so much. Like a straight up butterscotch disc. I didn’t love the micro glitter in the Jewels collection, but the flavors and overall idea of the collection was unique and so much fun! I remember girls would make sure the jewel part of the cap was sticking out of the tops of their pockets. I was seriously a trend πŸ˜‰

    • Heather T on July 2, 2013 at 3:08 AM said:

I have the same memory! Girls at my school also put the clip capped ones on their shoelaces πŸ™‚

    • I wish I could remember what Aquamarine Freeze smelled like, it’s definitely waxy today. Do you remember?
Yes, the Disney butterscotch was a bit off unfortunately.

That’s cute and I am not at all surprised about kids doing that! Lip Smackers (especially the sparkly ones) always felt like little treasures, I think. The jewel/cosmics style would do well today, glitter is slowly making a makeup comeback.

Great post! my amethyst sour grape still smells great, but the other ones i have do not. i’ve been looking for opal watermelon and turquoise sprinkle cake everywhere! hopefully i can nab them soon on the old ebay lol πŸ™‚

    • Amethyst Sour Grape aging well seems to be the general consensus so far! I’m sure you’ll find them since it was such a popular collection. Thanks for the input!

Loved this collection even if I prefer non shimmery smackers! They should really bring this back πŸ™‚ Oh and I remember that the cosmic lips collection was quite similar to this one… Can you do a post on them eventually? I never had the chance to get my hands on those ones.

  10. Damn earlier this year i was going to buy all of them on ebay but the seller didn’t ship to my location and I haven’t found them on ebay since! I wish they would bring this line back, I want to start a petition so they can bring the jewel lip glosses back, and also the cosmic shimmery ones. They remind me of my childhood

Plenty of pretty, but the big chunky sparkles felt so GRITTY on my mouth!

  12. Did anyone else love the Boysenberry Ruby gloss as much as I did? I didn’t have one of my own, but my cooler older cousin had one she’d share occasionally when she spent the summer with me. I’ll never forget the scent, as it defined that entire summer of fun girl time for me! I hate that I can’t find one anywhere now. I’d love to own one. (And keep the pretty container long after the gloss is gone. Ha.)

I had a few of these! I remember the aquamarine freeze smelled like berry heavenly from the Cosmic Shimmers Collection. I wish they would re-lease these!

  15. Renee on July 15, 2014 at 12:50 PM said:

I still have a couple of these (Dreamy Creamy Pearl and Opal Watermelon). I got them five years ago from Lip Smacker’s shop site in the but one get one free section. I wish these would come back too. Bunny Cookie, when are you going to do a review of the Cosmic Smackers? That was a cool collection too. I remember when they came in packs of 6 with those clip-on caps.

  16. Celeste on July 20, 2014 at 3:22 PM said:

I miss the Cosmic shimmery ones too! I found a few of them at a dollar store 4 years ago. I got red licorice launch and moon rock candy, but I haven’t found anymore since. I would buy those too, if they were re released. πŸ™‚ I hope BunnyCookie does a review of those sometime.

  17. I had six of these (pretty sure they did a set of six here in Australia) – Aquamarine Freeze, Strawberry Garnet Glaze, Sapphire Berry, Amethyst Sour Grape, Dreamy Creamy Pearl and Opal Watermelon.

Opal Watermelon was my favourite one, followed by Amethyst Sour Grape – although I do remember the glitter in that one being rather chunky and not very nice feeling on the lips!

I remember throwing them out when they started to smell waxy but now as a born-again Smackers enthusiast I wish I hadn’t. πŸ™

Funny how I can remember them 15 years later, it’s funny how smells from your childhood can resonate so strongly.

My favourites were Strawberry Garnet Glaze and Emerald Butter Mint πŸ™‚ Wishing I keep some of mine now. If anyone is selling any from this collection I’d be interested, I’m located in Australia too.

I think this set should make a comeback with a revamped design! I think maybe this time they should add more flavors to the collection with different jewels! The whole gem theme reminds me of Steven Universe.

Hmmm I liked the Amethyst Sour Grape and the Butterscotch Topaz.

  21. Celeste on May 8, 2015 at 1:47 PM said:

I had the strawberry garnet glaze, aquamarine, the peach and the diamond icing. I threw all mine out when I used them all up. They were sold at the 99 Cents Only Store, but that was about 8 years ago. I wish I had bought them and still had them now! I liked gemstone stuff a lot when I was little so I really liked this collection. They really need to bring all these back instead of doing generic Disney stuff all the time. At least the Paul Frank Collection had some really unique flavors and designs.

  22. Honey on June 17, 2015 at 5:26 PM said:

I never had the Birthstone ones, but I had gotten something similar to those. The Berry Beads, Kaleidoscope Candy, and Silver Snowball Cookie. Sadly, all three had lost all their scents, but I remember liking the Berry Beads the best and I had used that one all up that there’s not much left in it.

  23. So we know the opal watermelon one is watermelon jolly rancher, so where does sapphire Berry’s unique flavour come from? Because that one was realllly special, my all time favourite for sure, I miss that one so very much. I want it back again, but when I look on eBay all of the jewel lips balms and glosses are extinct now, they have become nonexistent now I’m guessing? Unless anyone has spare ones to sell? πŸ™‚ also, I wonder if all of the other jewel lip smackers have inspired flavours as well? Just like watermelon? That I’d like to know? Thanks πŸ˜€

    • There’s a Smacker Swap section of this blog. You could put that you want some lip balms and glosses from the Jewel Lips collection under “Wishlist.”

The dreamy creamy pearl flavor reminds me of the tea party treats Disney Lip Smacker. It has a creamy vanilla cake type flavor.

I can’t say anything about the other flavors because the only ones I’ve ever had was dreamy creamy pearl and opal watermelon (I bought them a few years ago on Lip Smacker’s old webstore. They came in a bag with nail polish and shimmery cheek gel.)

    • Tanya on August 5, 2015 at 2:59 PM said:

If I’m not mistaken, I think the current Calypso Berry (Ariel) might be similar?

    • To be honest, the closest thing to Sapphire Berry that they’ve done lately, is the Black Cherry Biggy. It has very similar notes and reminds me of Sapphire Berry and Boysenberry Ruby from the jewel Smackers which were very similar in flavor as well. Hope this helps.

  24. Ah, that’s interesting, in the past I used to have the opal watermelon glitter gloss, and I had that in balm format too, and I had sapphire berry in gloss and the balm, and I also had dreamy creamy pearl too in the balm which was amazing, and I have tried amethyst sour grape and j remember that one had a huge amount of flavour, it was so nice that one, and I had strawberry garnet glaze in gloss and balm too, and peach peridot and diamond icing, which was a lot like dreamy creamy pearl, and I also used to have aquamarine freeze in a balm as well, and can I just say, that one was a lot like sapphire berry too come to think of it, just slightly less flavour to it, it was like a mix between berry heavenly and sapphire berry, interesting. But I really love some of the spearmint flavours smackers did too, like mint jubilee, and arctics mint smoothie, those ones were from the holiday packs, I know that they are on eBay though which is good to know, I’ve never tried boysenberry ruby before but I must look into trying the black cherry biggy and calypso berry sometime, they sound good πŸ™‚

    • Celeste on August 6, 2015 at 1:47 PM said:

Yes the black cherry biggie and the calypso berry are amazing and have a strong flavor/scent. You won’t be disappointed. πŸ™‚

  25. Maria on August 6, 2015 at 3:41 PM said:

I’ve considered he Black Cherry but I don’t usually buy Biggies.

  26. Yeah, I find that the older smackers had a lot more flavour compared to the new ones, I had a few from the paul frank collection once, but they all smelled great, but there was no flavour to them at all, I also once had the candy kiss lip smacker with the liquid smacker and the balm, but the only one that had flavour was the liquid one, I think smackers have a different recipe now to the one they had in 1998 – 2005 although, I remember I had the ice creamies ones and they were full of flavour, I had vanilla and berry sundae, I had so many, probably around about 1,000 i’m guessing? No joke, I was a huge fan of them when I was younger πŸ™‚

  32. After all this time I wonder if Dreamy Creamy Pearl was suppose to be a cake batter flavor, the name would finally make sense. It was a creamy vanilla cake-like flavor so it’d make sense.

Also I recently was gifted a Chapstick brand Crisp Apple flavor. It doesn’t smell like a crisp apple at all or even anything apple but it had such a familiar flavor that I couldn’t put my finger on until recently. It smells nearly identical to the first version of Strawberry Garnet Glaze Lip Smacker it’s insane. I thought I’d never smell that again and am so happy although I don’t care for Chapstick usually.

    • Maria on March 6, 2019 at 2:10 AM said:

Is this the only line of lip smackers that had a jewel on top? I vividly remember collecting these as a kid, but I remember having one that smelled like vanilla and marshmallow. Maybe it was the diamond icing? I LOVED these. I remember being 11 years old and I went camping with my family. We went to the mall and i was sitting on a bench with my baby brother and when I got up, I left my purse behind. Someone stole it, emptied it and threw the purse in the trash. I was a kid so the only thing in it i cared about was my large collection of jewel topped lip smackers. I was heartbroken because I think they were limited edition and I couldn’t find them in stores anymore. It’s odd that whoever stole my purse decided to keep a dozen lip smackers instead of just throwing them out with the purse lol

  35. I had a bunch of these that I got in a little sparkly pink plastic case. Honestly don’t think I’ve ever experienced as much joy in my life since that day and I was like 5 lol
